Pension FAQ

Short answers to the questions asked most often about the Slovenian old-age pension, under ZPIZ-2 and the ZPIZ-2O amendment.

When can I retire?

The general rule is 67 years. For 2026–2034 a lower, transitional age applies instead, moving one step closer to the general rule every year — see the table on the retirement age page.

How many years of service do I need?

15 years for an ordinary old-age pension. Early retirement requires the same, 15 years.

Can I retire early?

Yes — the law states no separate minimum age, but permanently reduces the pension by 0,3 % for every month short of your own age under the transition table. See early retirement for the detail.

How is the pension amount calculated?

The pension base (the average of your best 24 years of earnings since 1970) is multiplied by a percentage that rises with years of pension service. The full explanation is on the how the pension is calculated page.

Is there a minimum or maximum pension?

The minimum pension is 785,00 € at 40 or more years of service, or otherwise 386,93 € (from 1 March 2026 2026). ZPIZ-2 states no maximum pension directly.

The law caps the pension base (an input to the calculation) elsewhere, which is not the same as a ceiling on the pension itself.

Are pensions in payment uprated?

Yes, once a year with the February payment. Through 2034, the uprating is the sum of 50 % of average-wage growth and 50 % of consumer-price growth over the preceding calendar year. For 2026 the uprating was set at 4,2 %.
