How the pension is calculated

The pension is the pension base multiplied by a percentage that rises with years of pension service. This page explains both parts of that calculation, and the minimum pension ZPIZ guarantees.

The pension base

The pension base is the monthly average of your own assessment bases (earnings) for the best 24 consecutive years of insurance from 1 January 1970 onward — not a plain average from one fixed date, but a selection of the BEST 24 years across the whole period since.

The percentage set by years of service

A percentage is then applied to the pension base, rising with each completed year of pension service: 15 years is worth 30 %, and 40 years is worth 70 %.

The last row (40 years, 70 %) is not a ceiling — the 2nd paragraph of 37. člen states a further bonus for service beyond 40 years, not shown on this page.

The minimum pension — two figures

ZPIZ guarantees two different minimums. For anyone with at least 40 years of pension service, the guaranteed pension is 785,00 €, unchanged across the year. For everyone else with 15 years to 39 years of service, the general minimum pension is 383,10 € through 28 February 2026, rising to 386,93 € from 1 March 2026 — the rise comes from the annual update of the underlying minimum pension base, not a change to the statutory percentage.

The maximum pension

No provision was found in ZPIZ-2 stating a maximum pension amount directly. The law caps the pension BASE (an input to the calculation) at a multiple of the minimum base elsewhere — which is not the same as a ceiling on the pension itself — so this page states no figure.

What this page does not state

The law also provides for revaluing earlier years' earnings — each year is recalculated by the ratio of average wages between the two years — but this site does not hold the Statistical Office's (SURS) year-by-year figures, so it cannot display a revalued earnings history.

It was also not established whether ZPIZ-2 currently pays a bonus for continuing to work past the retirement age without claiming — a provision of that kind existed in earlier versions of the law, but its current wording has not been confirmed here.

Below 15 years of pension service there is no right to an old-age pension at all, so the percentage scale does not continue any lower.
